being made redundant

So New Zealand has a lot of economic problems right now too. And guess what they called getting laid off here... being "made redundant". Doesn't that just sound horrible? They'll say things like, "My girlfriend was made redundant last April so she got a visa to go work in Ireland". Oh yeah, cause I'm sure there are tons of good jobs in Ireland right now too, right? Yikes.
